The United States will demonstrate a technology that can neutralize a large swarm of enemy drones at the same time
The U.S. Department of Defense’s Office of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Countermeasures, established in 2019, is working on technology that will neutralize large groups of enemy drones.
The popularity of drones on the battlefield is growing at a rapid pace. According to the Royal United Services Institute, a think tank, Ukraine is losing 10,000 drones a month in the war against Russia. FPV drones can destroy military equipment worth millions of dollars for less than $1000.
The emergence of swarms of unmanned aerial vehicles capable of flying in a coordinated manner on the battlefield is a major threat, according to the US military. That’s why the US Department of Defense is looking for ways to counteract.
To do this, you need to have a sufficient number of interceptors. These are not necessarily anti-aircraft missiles. To counter drones, electronic warfare capabilities and kinetic interceptors, including 30-mm cannons, can be used.
The Pentagon’s Counter-Drone Directorate is fully focused on creating capabilities to neutralize unmanned aerial vehicles. From spring 2021 to summer 2023, it conducted four demonstrations.
The first test was aimed at testing the capabilities of interceptors with low collateral damage. The latest test took place at a training ground in Arizona and was aimed at countering kamikaze drones. The fifth test, which will demonstrate the ability to neutralize a swarm of UAVs, is scheduled for June 2024.
