The US Attorney General suddenly arrived in Ukraine
Merrick Garland became the third high-ranking Biden administration official to come to Ukraine during the war.
US Attorney General Merrick Garland has arrived on an unannounced visit to Ukraine to support a joint effort to identify and bring to justice those responsible for war crimes. This was announced on Tuesday, June 21, by a senior official of the US Department of Justice.
“Prosecutor General Merrick Garland is on an unannounced visit to Ukraine today, where he will meet with Prosecutor General of Ukraine Iryna Venediktova to discuss US and international community efforts to support Ukraine in identifying, detaining and prosecuting those involved in war crimes.’ — stressed a representative of the Ministry of Justice.
It is noted that Garland is visiting Ukraine as part of his European tour, which he went to participate in the US-EU ministerial meeting in Paris. He became the third high-ranking Biden administration official to come to Ukraine during the war. In April, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin paid an official visit to Kyiv.
Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, as of June 17, law enforcement officers have registered 26,767 war crimes. Of these: 17,313 – on violations of the laws and customs of war.
