The US Congress has decided to ban TikTok in the country

The decision of the US parliament is aimed at pushing ByteDance to abandon TikTok.

The US Congress has approved a decision to ban the Chinese social network TikTok, which will now be unavailable for download in 270 days unless the Chinese owner sells the platform. As reported by the Financial Times, on Tuesday, 79 members of the Senate voted in favor of banning the social network, with 18 against.

The decision is aimed at pushing ByteDance to abandon TikTok to avoid a ban. TikTok will probably file a lawsuit to block the law.

The application will no longer receive updates, which will make it difficult to use as operating systems evolve and eventually make it obsolete.

The bill quickly gained traction after briefings by security officials who warned that Beijing could force ByteDance to hand over the personal data of 170 million Americans who use the app.

The House of Representatives passed the bill last month, but it has faced obstacles in the Senate due to concerns about violations of freedom of speech. Furthermore, TikTok denies that the Chinese government has any control over the app.

The senators also urged young Americans to understand that Congress was trying to protect them, not just ban the popular app.

Most Chinese experts in Washington doubt that Beijing will allow ByteDance to hand over the algorithm that made the app such a successful analog to TikTok in the United States unless the company wins in court.

As we have already written, the topic of blocking TikTok is being discussed in Ukraine. This issue is actively raised by Yaroslav Yurchyshyn, chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Freedom of Speech. On April 1, the MP said that a ban on the app could become a reality in Ukraine if the US approves the blocking of TikTok.
