The US gave Ukraine a ‘green light’ for drone strikes on Russian territory – The Times
The Times, referring to its sources in the US Department of Defense, who wished to remain anonymous, writes that the US no longer insists that Ukraine does not carry out strikes, including drone strikes, on the territory of Russia.
Previously, the Pentagon feared that strikes on Russian territory would lead to an escalation of the conflict: for example, that the Russian Federation would then use nuclear weapons or strike NATO countries in response. But now the department has changed its mind.
‘We still use the same calculations of escalation, but the fear of escalation has changed. Now everything is different. This is because the calculus of war has changed due to the suffering and brutality that Ukrainians are experiencing at the hands of the Russians,’ the source said.
This happened after numerous Russian attacks and shelling of Ukrainian critical civilian infrastructure and energy facilities.
‘We’re not telling Kyiv, ‘Don’t strike the Russians.’ We can’t tell them what to do. How they use their weapons is up to them, but when they use the weapons we’ve provided, we only insist , so that the Ukrainian military follows the international laws of war and adhere to the Geneva Conventions,’ the source in the Pentagon emphasizes. According to him, Ukraine complies with these conditions.
At the same time, the United States does not publicly support or encourage strikes on Russian territory.
