The US Navy will receive $621 million for the construction of a new nuclear submarine USS Wisconsin
Despite a potential US shutdown, the Navy has received funding to begin work on the USS Wisconsin (SSBN-827) nuclear-powered submarine. Thanks to the government’s effective actions, the Navy received the necessary funds.
Details:
The U.S. government has allocated $621 million to finance the construction of a second Columbia-class nuclear submarine. These funds were included in a 71-page draft law with a temporary budget.
This bill was ratified just a few minutes before the end of the 2023 fiscal year. The main reason for the allocation of funds for the USS Wisconsin (SSBN 827) is the strategic importance of this project for the United States and its priority status in the Navy’s procurement programs.
The USS Wisconsin (SSBN 827) will be the second in a series of Columbia-class nuclear-powered submarines, the first of which is the District of Columbia, currently under construction with a projected cost of $8.5 billion. The total cost of this program for the US Department of Defense will be approximately $113 billion.
The 12 new Columbia-class submarines will be equipped with Trident II (D5) intercontinental missiles with a range of over 12,000 km and a limited number of nuclear warheads. These submarines are intended to replace 14 Ohio-class nuclear-powered submarines and will serve for 42 years. The construction task was entrusted to General Dynamics Electric Boat and Newport News Shipbuilding.
