Third accident in a year: liquid leaks from the Russian module of the International Space Station

A leak occurred in the Russian module attached to the International Space Station, which led to the release of liquid into space.

This coolant leak is the third major leak from the Russian spacecraft to occur on the ISS in the last 12 months. In December, NASA had to postpone a spacewalk after a coolant began leaking from the capsule, which was then docked to the space station.

Roscosmos said that the leak was related to the external backup radiator circuit in the Nauka module and that the main thermal circuit was supposedly working normally. In the previous two leaks, they blamed external factors.

As a reminder, in September 2022, due to the depressurization of the outer circuit of the Soyuz spacecraft’s cooling system, the Russian astronauts’ spacewalk was canceled. At the time, the cause of the damage was called a meteorite or a factory defect in the Russian ship.
