Trump Proposes Ukraine Cede Territory and Abandon NATO
The administration of US President Donald Trump has presented a controversial seven-point ‘peace plan’ for Ukraine, which effectively calls for recognizing Russian occupation and abandoning Euro-Atlantic aspirations. The plan has caused outrage among Ukrainian officials and Western partners due to its openly pro-Russian position.
Dangerous Concessions and Loss of Sovereignty
The Trump administration has presented a scandalous plan regarding Ukraine, which experts call a ‘capitulation to Russia’. According to The Telegraph, the seven-point document effectively legitimizes Russian aggression and deprives Ukraine of Euro-Atlantic prospects.
The plan envisions radical concessions from Ukraine, including recognition of Crimea’s annexation and effective loss of most occupied territories. In return, it offers symbolic return of small areas in the Kherson region and access to the Dnipro River estuary.
Particular attention is drawn to the point regarding the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, which according to the plan would come under American control. The electricity would be supplied to both Ukraine and Russia. American companies are also guaranteed access to Ukrainian natural resources through a special subsoil agreement.
Axios sources report that the plan emerged after a 4-hour meeting between Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and Putin. US Vice President JD Vance publicly supported the initiative, stating the necessity of ‘territorial exchange’ and threatening US withdrawal from negotiations if parties refuse.
The Ukrainian side categorically rejects the proposed terms. First Vice Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko stated the unacceptability of a frozen conflict and recognition of Crimea’s occupation. Kyiv insists on a complete ceasefire without preconditions as the primary step.
Notably, the high-level negotiations scheduled for April 23 in London were downgraded after Ukraine’s refusal to make territorial concessions. The Washington Post confirms that Washington is dissatisfied with Kyiv’s principled position regarding a ceasefire as a prerequisite for further negotiations.
Ukraine’s European partners are also expressing concern about the American initiative. The proposal for quick lifting of sanctions on Russia and restoration of energy cooperation is particularly critically received, contradicting the position of Great Britain and other European allies.
President Zelenskyy is trying to reduce tensions, stating that the proposals published by the media are not Washington’s official position. However, sources in the Ukrainian government characterize the plan as ‘extremely one-sided in Russia’s favor’ with clear benefits for the aggressor and vague promises for Ukraine.
The plan proposed by Trump has met with strong resistance among Ukrainian leadership and international partners. Ukraine continues to insist on a complete ceasefire without preconditions and restoration of the state’s territorial integrity. This plan demonstrates a dangerous departure from the principles of international law and threatens further destabilization of the region.
