TSMC will invest $40 billion in the US and increase semiconductor production in the country by 200%
TSMC this week broke ground on a state-of-the-art facility in Arizona. Before the ceremony, the Taiwanese company made a statement in which it talked about its future plans.
As it turned out, the manufacturer intends to build two factories in the United States at once. The first enterprise will appear by 2024 and will produce products made according to the norms of 4-nanometer technology.
TSMC plans to open a second plant by 2026. Production of 3-nanometer chips will be launched there. The total output of silicon wafers will be 60,000 pieces per month. This is three times more than was originally planned.
Naturally, the volume of investments will also be increased. Initially, the Taiwanese company planned to invest $12 billion in American production, which would make it possible to produce 20,000 silicon wafers every month and create 1,600 jobs. According to the updated plans, TSMC will invest $40 billion and the number of jobs will increase to 4,500.
High-ranking American officials, including US President Joe Biden, took part in the ceremony dedicated to the start of equipment installation. A few hours before the event, NVIDIA and Apple confirmed that they would become TSMC customers. The Taiwanese company will also supply its products to AMD.
