Twice as much ‘cotton’: Ukrainian specialists improved drones for the Armed Forces with a new mechanism
Engineers made a new body and ammunition drop system for the hexacopter of one of the units of the Armed Forces.
Scientists from the Central Ukrainian National Technical University (CNTU) in the city of Kropyvnytskyi modified a combat drone for the Ukrainian military. They presented the results of their work on the website of the educational institution.
A senior student serving in the Armed Forces asked the university staff to improve the multicopter for the needs of his unit, equipping it with a new mechanism for dropping VOG ammunition. Previously, the military used a system designed for two VOG grenades, which was developed by a graduate of the National Technical University Oleksandr Kuzmin, but it turned out to be insufficient, so the soldiers asked to increase the ammunition to four shells, while maintaining the dimensions, weight and balancing.
Employees of the department of mechanical engineering, mechatronics and robotics fulfilled the order of the Armed Forces. They made calculations, selected appropriate materials and made a 3D model of the mechanism for dropping four grenades, as well as a new housing for the UAV. During the tests, engineers simulated the arrival of a signal that would cause the grips holding the ammunition to open in the correct sequence, maintaining balance during flight. On December 31, the drone was returned to the front line.
‘Everything works. The military liked the design of the mechanism proposed by the specialists of the MMRT department,’ reported the press service of the Central Technical University. ‘The military of one of the units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine will now be able to drop twice as much VOG ammunition on the heads of the occupiers thanks to the modification of their drone.’
Previously, it was written how students of the technology hub in Chernivtsi assemble drones and other equipment for the military. Among other things, they make ammunition drop systems and power banks needed to charge devices in the field.
It was also reported that Ukrainian craftsmen assembled drones for the Armed Forces from foam plastic and mounting foam. The cost of such devices, including electronics, is about $100. Soldiers of the ‘Sonechko’ volunteer battalion use such disposable UAVs at the front, dropping self-made bombs with pellets.
