Ukraine announces the downing of Russian drones in Romania. Bucharest believes there was no direct threat
During a massive Russian attack near the port of Izmail (Odesa region), the “chess pieces” fell and detonated on the territory of Romania. Bucharest says there was no threat
Andriy Demchenko, a spokesman for the State Border Guard Service, told a Ukrainian publication about the incident.
“Through the designated communication channels, Ukrainian border guards informed their Romanian colleagues that they had recorded two detonations on the territory of Romania in certain areas during the Russian attack with aircraft. In addition, Ukrainian border guards asked for possible information regarding these incidents,” he said.
Commenting on the incident, the spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Oleh Nikolenko, called on partners to strengthen the protection of Ukrainian skies by providing air defense, missile defense and combat aircraft.
“This (the fall of the Shahed in Romania – ed.) is another confirmation that Russian missile terror poses a huge threat not only to the security of Ukraine, but also to the security of neighboring countries, including NATO member states,” the diplomat wrote.
The Romanian Foreign Ministry condemned the attacks on Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure and called them unjustified and in violation of all international humanitarian rules. They also noted that the structures monitored the situation in real time.
“The drone attacks carried out by the Russian Federation did not pose a direct military threat to our national territory or Romanian territorial waters,” the Defense Ministry said.
The ministry noted that it continues to implement enhanced vigilance measures, as well as measures designed to strengthen defense and deterrence on the eastern flank, in accordance with the national plan and NATO plans.
