Ukraine has started to rent air defense systems

Ukraine has begun to rent air defense systems, Air Force Command spokesman Yuriy Ihnat said on Sunday during a telethon.

“We already have this practice. Some countries have lent us theirs. It is clear that each country cares about its own defense, no one will just give away their air defense. Why is it taking so long to supply air defense systems, why is it so dosed? [There are simply not enough air defense systems to give us at once. But eventually we are getting stronger, new systems are coming in, even if they are somewhat outdated, like Hawk, but we need more,” Ihnat said.

He explained that a country as large as Ukraine requires a very large number of air defense systems.

“The range of the anti-aircraft guns of the famous Gepard is 4.5 km. You can imagine how many Gepards are needed to cover a certain direction. In addition to Gepard, there are IRIS-T medium-range systems, NASAMS – up to 40 km, Buk M1 – also up to 40 km, S-300 – 70 km, Patriot is more long-range – over 100 km,” Ihnat said.

According to him, even if the air defense systems are loaned to Ukraine only temporarily, for the heating season, it is still good.

“The missiles will be defended, they will be fired,” he explained.

Ignat refused to name the partner countries.
