Ukrainian Armed Forces demonstrate a “mini-gun” made of six AK-74s to shoot at Russian drones
This design clearly demonstrates the impact that racist drones have on the course of hostilities
Soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine made an improvised anti-aircraft system consisting of six AK-74 assault rifles mounted on a structure that allows all the “barrels” of the anti-aircraft gun to rotate. This design is equipped with a sight and can provide simultaneous firing of all six guns.
It is visually similar in principle to the legendary American multi-barrelled Minigun, which allows this improvised installation to be called a “mini-gun” as well. The Drive portal in particular drew attention to this.
For the first time, the Armed Forces of Ukraine demonstrated such a “mini-gun” during the shooting at two UAVs of an unknown type. At the same time, we can also see a Soviet Degtyarev DP-27 machine gun from the Second World War.
And this shows how badly our defenders lack weapons to counter enemy drones, which is why they have to build such improvised anti-aircraft guns, even if their combat effectiveness is questionable at first glance.
From a general perspective, this example demonstrates the broad impact that the use of various types of UAVs, including kamikaze drones, by the Russians has on the course of hostilities against Ukraine. And also how unexpected technical solutions our defenders have to come up with to counter such threats, given the objective lack of resources.
Here, in particular, we can recall one example from the fall of 2022, when the Ukrainian Defense Forces had just begun to deploy mobile groups to hunt for Shakhty. In one of these groups, “anti-aircraft carts” were spotted, made on the basis of a UAZ “loaf” and equipped with twin PKT machine guns on improvised turrets.
Earlier, Defense Express reported that in March 2023, US experts “discovered” that the Armed Forces of Ukraine were even forced to use Maxim machine guns to shoot at racists.
We also told you that in October 2022, the Pentagon launched a program to buy all available AK-74 assault rifles and their derivatives for the Ukrainian Armed Forces, although this form of support for Ukraine has not been officially announced.
