Ukrainian Armed Forces show what unexpected role MiG-29s can play at the front (video)

How Soviet-made fighters are being used while we wait for Western F-16s

Stratcom of the Armed Forces of Ukraine published a video of combat operations of Su-25 and MiG-29 tactical aircraft at the front during the battles against the racists. The action in this video probably took place in the summer of this year. In this footage, we can see many spectacular moments, such as a Su-25 flying at low altitude over one of our Mi-8s, or our attack aircraft performing maneuvers in pairs.

But it is worth paying attention to another point, namely that the MiG-29 is providing air cover, and that we see a rather illogical ratio of one fighter to two attack aircraft.

By this point, we could see a lot of materials, for example, about why Soviet-style fighters in the Ukrainian Armed Forces do not meet the requirements for modern air combat, especially in comparison with the Rashist Su-34 and Su-35. Or that the same MiG-29s were adapted as carriers of AGM-88 HARM anti-radar missiles or JDAM-ER guided bombs.

And against this background, it may look extremely surprising to see the same MiG-29 performing the task of providing air cover for our strike aircraft. Because the need for modern fighters and technologies for our aviators has been emphasized more than once.

But on the other hand, our pilots cannot carry out air strikes against the Russian occupiers without fighter cover. Therefore, it seems that fighter jet escort for our attack aircraft is both technically and morally important, and can give them more confidence in their own abilities.
