Ukrainian grain is exported via Croatia
The Ukrainian Ministry of Economy calls the new route for grain sales through Croatian ports "niche" but "popular."
Ukrainian grain is exported through Croatian ports, according to the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine.
“Thank you for this opportunity. This trade route, although niche, is already popular. We are ready to develop it by expanding the capabilities of the transport corridor. We believe that this logistics route will play an important role in bilateral trade between our countries even after the war,” said First Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Yulia Svyrydenko during a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister of Croatia Andrej Plenkovic on Thursday, September 7.
According to the report, the parties also raised the issue of the production of demining equipment in Ukraine and preparations for the demining conference to be held in Zagreb in October.
“Russia continues to launch missile attacks on grain infrastructure on the Black Sea coast, which significantly limits the possibilities of domestic grain exports,” the Ukrainian ministry emphasized, speaking about the new trade route.
Termination of the “grain deal”
In July 2022, Ukraine and Russia signed the Black Sea Grain Initiative (also known as the “grain deal”) with the mediation of Turkey and the UN. It was about sea corridors for the export of Ukrainian grain. On July 17, 2023, the agreement expired, and the Russian Federation refused to participate in it any longer. Efforts to renew the grain deal have been unsuccessful so far.
According to the EU, Ukraine exported more than 30 million tons of grain and other food under the grain deal from August 2022 to May 2023.
