Ukrainian sniper sets world record: hits occupant at a distance of 3800 meters with a domestic rifle

A Ukrainian sniper has set a new world record for long-range sniper shooting. Using Horizon’s Lord sniper rifle, a Ukrainian-designed rifle with the HL 12.7×114 mm cartridge, the sniper hit the Russian occupier at a distance of 3800 meters, exceeding the previous record of 3540 meters.

In 2017, a member of Canada’s Joint Task Force 2 (JTF-2) made the second longest recorded sniper kill at a range of 3,540 meters during the Iraq War. The third place is taken by an Australian sniper from the 2nd Regiment, SOCOMD Commando Force of the Australian Defense Force, who in 2012 during the war in Afghanistan hit the enemy at a range of 2815 meters.

Introduced in 2021, the Horizon’s Lord sniper rifle, developed by the Ukrainian arms factory MAJAK, has a single-shot bolt action and uses the 12.7x114HL cartridge.

The Horizon’s Lord rifle features a single-shot bolt action and an impressive barrel length of 1000 mm. To meet practical combat requirements, the rifle is subject to weight and length restrictions: the maximum total weight is 15 kg, and the length of the folded stock does not exceed 1.6 m.

The development of the 12.7x114HL cartridge was prompted by the need for a universal cartridge that provides accurate shooting at long distances and specialized bullets.

Improvements to the 12.7x114HL cartridge include flatter trajectories, increased supersonic range, improved energy retention at longer ranges, and reduced sensitivity to wind. In addition, the cartridge provides a 30% reduction in recoil compared to the 14.5 x 114 mm cartridge.

In addition to its individual capabilities, the Horizon’s Lord rifle is designed to be compatible with other firearms. Other rifles chambered for the 14.5×114 mm cartridge can be easily converted to the 12.7×114HL cartridge. Moreover, the company is developing a new machine gun for this innovative cartridge, which indicates a wider integration of 12.7x114HL ammunition into various firearms platforms.
