The decision was based on an attempt to limit daily tourism in certain time periods and regulate the flow of visitors.
One of the world’s most touristy cities has decided to introduce a visitor fee. This was decided by the Venice authorities, given the need to regulate large flows of tourists, especially during certain time periods. Funds will be taken on specific dates and days, not all the time.
This was reported by the press service of the Municipality of Venice.
According to the Mayor of Venice Luigi Brugnaro, the paid entrance is the first step in the process of regulating visitor access. The so-called experiment is designed to improve the living conditions of the city and all its residents. Of course, there will be problems in the process of implementing the planned, but the local authorities are ready for difficulties.
“We will conduct our experiment with great humility and understanding that problems may arise,” the mayor said.
The entrance fee will be 5 euros per day, and the amount will not be reduced for certain categories of tourists. The money will be collected within 29 days next year, namely:
- from April 25 to May 5, 2024;
- every Saturday and Sunday in May, June, and July.
The fee will be collected directly in front of the entrance to the Old Town during peak tourist hours – from 8:30 to 16:00. The fee will apply to all age groups except children under 14. The collection will be carried out using modern technologies: a web application available on the official website of the Municipality of Venice. There, you can get a ticket (QR code) that must be presented in case of control.
