UN strongly condemns Russia’s nighttime missile attack on Ukrainian civilian energy infrastructure
The UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Ukraine, Denise Brown, has strongly criticized the recent actions of the Russian Federation, which has struck at Ukraine’s vital infrastructure. As a result of these actions, large areas of Ukraine, including the cities of Kharkiv, Kryvyi Rih and Zaporizhzhia, faced power and water outages, which deepened the humanitarian catastrophe in the country. “I am deeply appalled by the scale of the attacks today,” – Brown said in a statement posted on the UN’s official website.
She emphasized that attacks on civilian infrastructure not only cause direct suffering to the population, but also have far-reaching consequences, worsening the already difficult humanitarian situation. In addition to direct damage to infrastructure, the strikes caused new civilian casualties and destroyed homes and schools.
Brown also recalled the requirements of international humanitarian law, which prohibits targeted attacks on civilians and civilian objects. “International humanitarian law must be respected,” – she urged, emphasizing the importance of protecting civilians in conflicts.
- As a reminder, as a result of the Russian attack on the morning of March 22, a number of Ukrainian cities were left without electricity and water supply. A large hydroelectric power plant, DniproHES in Zaporizhzhia, and a number of DTEK thermal power plants were also hit.
