Under the pressure of the regulator: third-party payment systems may appear on the iPhone

Apple is ready to allow other payment services, such as PayPal and Venmo, to use the NFC chip on its iPhone and Apple Watch devices if the EU finds this a sufficient measure to resolve the antitrust dispute.

This was reported by Reuters.

Last year, the European Commission accused Apple of violating EU antitrust laws, claiming that the company abused its dominant position in the market for smart mobile devices and digital wallets.

The regulator believes that Apple restricts competition and consumer choice by not allowing other services to use the NFC chip for contactless payments.

Therefore, Apple has offered the EU to open the NFC chip to competitors under certain conditions that were not disclosed. By doing so, the company hopes to settle the regulator’s claims and avoid a large fine.

In January, the European Commission will invite comments from Apple’s competitors and customers to make a decision on the measure proposed by the company.
