US modernizes Golden Dome missile defense system using artificial intelligence
The US Army is launching an ambitious project to integrate advanced artificial intelligence technologies into the Golden Dome missile defense system. This innovation aims to create a more effective and autonomous defense system that can operate with minimal human personnel involvement.
Revolutionary changes in missile defense system
As part of the large-scale modernization of the Golden Dome missile defense system, the US Army is implementing advanced artificial intelligence technologies to enhance the effectiveness and autonomy of defense complexes. This was announced by Major General Frank Lozano during a symposium of the Association of the United States Army in Huntsville.
The modernization program is based on three key directions: implementation of AI-based fire control systems, development of remotely controlled complexes, and development of autonomous defense systems. The military plans to utilize experience gained during the development of Guam’s defense system, which is set to become operational by 2027.
Innovative solutions in deployment and maintenance include installing missiles in special containers or underground storage facilities. This approach will significantly reduce the need for technical maintenance – equipment status checks can be conducted remotely once every few weeks.
To implement the project, the US Army is establishing cooperation with leading technology companies. In particular, negotiations are underway with French company Safran regarding the automation of data synchronization processes, and with American company Anduril, which recently acquired Numerica – a software developer for the IBCS system.
Over the next six to nine months, the military will focus on defining specific requirements for AI components and will conduct a series of industry events to attract new developers, including venture companies and startups. The Integrated Fires Test Campaign will serve as the foundation for testing new technological solutions, which from 2026 will focus on integrating autonomous systems and artificial intelligence into the Golden Dome architecture.
