US to upgrade HIMARS with ultra-precise PrSM missiles for $4.9 billion
The US Army Command has signed a major contract with Lockheed Martin for the production of new Precision Strike Missiles. The $4.9 billion program will significantly enhance the strike capabilities of HIMARS and M270 MLRS systems.
Breakthrough in high-precision target engagement
The US Army Command has signed a $4.9 billion contract with Lockheed Martin for the production of Precision Strike Missiles (PrSM) under the Increment One program.
The agreement was concluded by the US Army Contracting Command at Redstone Arsenal (Alabama) following a competitive request for proposals that received only one submission. The new PrSM missiles are designed as a modern replacement for the aging ATACMS and are intended for use with M270 Multiple Launch Rocket Systems and M142 HIMARS high-mobility artillery rocket systems.
The PrSM Increment One program demonstrates significant progress in the development of US missile technologies, focusing on three key aspects:
- Increased strike range, which was confirmed during testing at Vandenberg Space Force Base in May 2023
- Enhanced accuracy for destroying critical enemy infrastructure, including command posts and air defense systems
- Improved operational deployment from HIMARS and M270 platforms
Successful PrSM trials include a series of tests: combat trials at White Sands Test Range in November 2023 and final testing in February 2024, which paved the way for serial production.
Future missile modifications envision the implementation of a self-guidance system for moving targets and multi-mode guidance. Production will continue until March 30, 2030, with funding distributed according to individual orders.
The PrSM production contract is a significant step in modernizing US armed forces and strengthening US defense capabilities. The new missiles will significantly expand the capabilities of existing HIMARS and M270 systems, providing greater accuracy and target engagement range.
