Zephyr, the manufacturer of the drone that stayed in the air for 64 days, opens a new division for UAVs
The company will continue to work on its Zephyr, but will also develop new projects
The US Space and Defense defense division of the European aerospace company Airbus has recently announced the opening of its new business unit, which will focus on the market for military unmanned aerial vehicles.
“Our new line of business is focused on helping the Department of Defense [CША] solve highly complex UAV-related problems from the surface to the stratosphere,” commented Brian Zarchin, a retired Army pilot, on the opening of the new “unmanned” unit, Defense News reports.
The publication reminds us that, given the current needs, the Pentagon is actively developing the unmanned aerial vehicle sector, planning to arm the army with a number of different drones that will perform various missions on the battlefield, from strike to reconnaissance and transportation. And in August, the US Department of Defense launched the Replicator initiative, under which it plans to significantly enhance the unmanned capabilities of the army within 18-24 months.
As for the new Airbus US Space and Defense division, it will primarily develop its Zephyr solar-powered drone project, which spent 64 days in the air during its record-breaking flight.
At the same time, the company’s CEO Rob Heckle said that “our team ensures that our fighters are equipped with the technology that enables them to make informed decisions to counter the threat” and that in addition to Zephyr, they also “envision” several drone solutions that will support a range of customer missions and operational needs.
