China has shown its drone killer monster in action
Recently, during an exercise, China demonstrated its advanced Type 625 short-range air defense system.
The 150th Synthetic Brigade PLAGF, part of the 77th Army Group Command in the Western Theater, demonstrated advanced Type 625 systems during live-fire exercises. These systems are primarily designed to protect against low-altitude air threats, countering helicopters, low-flying aircraft such as Su-25s, and combat drones, to combat the growing challenge posed by drones on the battlefield.
China’s Type 625 air defense system combines a self-propelled anti-aircraft gun (SPAAG) and four missile launchers mounted on an eight-wheeled tactical chassis.
The SPAAG has a unique 6-barrel 25 mm Gatling gun and four short-range surface-to-air missiles. Utilizing 25×287 mm ammunition technology together with updated radar, computer systems and data link, this system provides reliable protection against airborne threats.
The Type 625 system, mounted on an 8×8 wheeled, highly mobile chassis with a front-mounted engine, includes a large combat module (tower) that houses Gatling guns, anti-aircraft missiles and fire control systems. It includes radars, optoelectronic detectors, and, in particular, offers two variants – one equipped with a highly sensitive radar capable of detecting even small objects with minimal effective reflective surfaces.
