Tesla has lowered its range estimates for several Y, S, and X models in the US, reducing the range for some trims by 6%. In particular, Tesla’s online configurator now displays an estimated range of 285 miles (458 km) for the Performance Model Y, which is 18 miles less than the previous estimate of 303 miles.
The range of the Model Y Long Range has decreased from 330 to 310 miles, and for the Model X Plaid – from 333 to 326 miles. The estimates for the Model S Plaid have also been updated – more specifically, for the configuration with 19-inch wheels, which has dropped from 396 miles to 359. These changes did not affect Tesla in the UK and the EU, and the range of other cars, such as the Cybertruck, Model 3, and Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive, remained unchanged, The Verge reports.
Tesla did not provide an explanation for the decrease in the estimated range. Probably, the changes are related to two things after reading the company’s internal documents. First, it is Tesla’s “comfort and functionality improvements” that require more power, and second, the introduction of revised EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) testing requirements that result in “higher consumption and a slight decrease in overall range.”
Over the years, Tesla has earned a reputation for overstating its range, with the EPA claiming that CEO Elon Musk exaggerated the 400-mile range for the Tesla Model S Long Range back in 2020. Last October, the US Department of Justice launched an investigation into Tesla’s claimed mileage following reports that many of these figures were intentionally inflated.
