According to preliminary data, the fire on the icebreaker Yermak started due to welding operations.
On Thursday, February 29, the diesel-electric icebreaker Yermak caught fire in the Big Port of St. Petersburg. This was reported by the Russian news agency RIA Novosti with reference to the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations.
The fire occurred on the way to the Turukhtannye Islands in the Kirovsky district of St. Petersburg, where the icebreaker was moored at Pier 89. According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the icebreaker was being recycled and there was a lot of construction waste inside, which caught fire.

According to preliminary data, the fire broke out in a storage room on the first deck when welding work was being carried out there, and rubber and wood caught fire. There are fire extinguishers on the ship, but they could not cope with the fire on the lower deck.
Before the firefighters arrived, 9 people were evacuated. There were no casualties. Emergency services are already working at the scene, with about 50 firefighters involved in extinguishing the fire.
Investigators of the Northwestern Transport Prosecutor’s Office have launched an investigation.
