In Zaporizhzhia, there were two direct hits to the DniproHES, and one of the substations was seriously damaged – Ukrhydroenergo
In Zaporizhzhia region, during a large-scale attack by the Russian army, there were two direct hits on one of the substations of the Dnipro hydroelectric power plant, HPP-2. She is currently in critical condition. It is unknown when HPP-2 will be restored. Ihor Syrota, director of Ukrhydroenergo, said this on Radio Liberty, UNN reports.
He explained that the DniproHES in Zaporizhzhia consists of two stations, both of which are currently out of operation.
“HPP-2 is in a critical condition, and HPP-1 is also out of operation. We are taking measures to raise the gates and work out the water, because we cannot process water through the plant,” said Syrota.
According to him, it is necessary to completely restore the machine room and electrical equipment of the plant. Syrota suggested that HPP-2 would not be able to operate for a certain period or would operate in a limited mode. Detailed information on the consequences of the Russian strikes on the hydroelectric power plants will be available during the day, he added.
There were no casualties among DniproHES employees, said the head of Ukrhydroenergo.
Missile attack on Dnipro HPP on March 22 – what is known
On March 22, Russia launched its largest attack on Ukraine’s power grid in at least a year, damaging facilities in many regions.
Mariupol mayor’s adviser Petro Andriushchenko said that Russians hit the Dnipro hydroelectric power plant dam, a missile hit a passenger trolleybus with people on it. He also posted a photo showing the damaged dam of the hydroelectric power plant.
The police reported that traffic through the Dnipro hydroelectric power station was completely stopped.
At the same time, the Center for Public Advocacy stated that the DniproHES is still standing, and that Russians are spreading fakes about the destruction of the dam and blackout in Ukraine.
Later, Ukrhydroenergo confirmed the attack on the hydroelectric power plant and the fire, saying that there was no threat of a breakthrough and that the situation at the dam was under control.
The attack on the Dnipro HPP is the largest attack on the facility ever, and Russia aimed to completely disable the hydroelectric power plant, said Volodymyr Kudrytskyi, chairman of NPC Ukrenergo.
Dniprovska HPP consists of two power plants that form a single complex of hydraulic structures located under one dam – Dniprovska HPP-1 (10 hydraulic units with radial-axis turbines) and Dniprovska HPP-2 (8 hydraulic units: 6 with rotary blade turbines, 2 with propeller turbines).
