US tests Minuteman III intercontinental missile for the second time in a week
The United States has tested its Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) to test its nuclear deterrent capabilities.
The first test, which took place on June 4, involved the launch of an unarmed intercontinental ballistic missile from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. According to the U.S. Air Force Global Strike Command, the purpose of the test launch was to “verify the safety, security, effectiveness and readiness of the weapon system.”
Two days later, another Minuteman III was launched from the same location and flew approximately 6,759 kilometers to the Ronald Reagan Missile Defense Range in the Marshall Islands.
These tests were reportedly intended to demonstrate that the US nuclear program is reliable and effective in deterring modern threats.
“These tests are not only important to our nation’s defence, but also a key moment in demonstrating the exceptional capabilities and experience of our dedicated team,” said Space Launch Delta 30 Vice Commander Colonel Brian Titus.
