Skoda Fabia in the next generation may become electric
Following the discontinuation of the Citigo around two years ago, the Fabia is currently Skoda’s smallest model on the European market. However, the Fabia’s future seems uncertain at the moment.
The head of the Czech company, Klaus Zelmer, recently spoke to the media during the debut of the Vision 7S concept. Zellmer confirmed that an all-electric successor to the Fabia is already in development, although it doesn’t look like it will be ready to hit the market until the last quarter of this decade.
‘The Fabia, at its price point, will be replaced by a battery electric car, and we’re working on that,’ Zellmer said. “The biggest issue currently is the cost of battery electric cars, especially when making a car [the size of] the Fabia. We will have to remain patient.’
The British publication reports that the new all-electric model will likely be based on the initial version of Volkswagen’s MEB architecture. It will be one of the last electric cars from VAG to be based on this platform before the conglomerate switches to the new SSP platform.
In terms of design, the Fabia successor will reportedly feature Skoda’s new design language, introduced by the Vision 7S concept. This probably means that the new model may look like a small crossover rather than a classic hatchback.
It is currently unknown whether this new electric car will be called Fabia. Skoda wants to switch to an all-electric model line-up by the end of the decade, and it may decide to give some of the new models new names that aren’t historically associated with the brand, like Fabia.
