The owner of an electric car in the USA found himself in a difficult situation on the eve of Christmas.
December 2022 was marked by a weather anomaly in the USA: most of the country was covered by record snowfalls, and in some cities the temperature dropped significantly below the typical indicators for this time of year.
The frosts continued around Christmas, which many Americans prefer to spend with their relatives by car. And for at least one Tesla owner, the family holiday was ruined when his Model S refused to charge in the cold.
TikTok user Domnatishow posted a video that has garnered more than 10,000 comments, complaining that his Tesla battery won’t charge in sub-zero temperatures. He stopped at a Tesla Supercharger with just over 30 kilometers to go. The temperature was -7 degrees Celsius.

Domnatishow put the Model S on charge while waiting for the battery to warm up: according to the instructions, preparing it this way can increase the charging speed. However, after several hours, the Tesla still did not start charging. The owner decided to leave the electric car at the station and went home in a companion car. After 15 hours, he returned to find that nothing had changed: the Tesla was still not charged. As a result, Domnatishow had to cancel plans for Christmas.
Owners of electric cars often face problems in cold weather. Tesla, Porsche, Volkswagen and other brands of running ‘battery’ cars tested a year ago lost an average of 50 percent of their range at -20 degrees Celsius.
Frost not only reduces the range, but also affects the charging speed: earlier this year it was found that the Toyota bZ4X cannot use express charging when the temperature drops below zero.
