In March, Poland will begin construction of an electronic fence on the border with the Kaliningrad region of the Russian Federation, the Polish border service reported on Sunday, February 5. The contract with the company TELBUD worth more than PLN 373 million (EUR 79 million) was signed at the beginning of December last year.
According to the spokeswoman of the department, Anna Mikhalska, the contractor is in the process of preparing the project, which will then be submitted for approval to the border service. The length of the fence will be 199 kilometers.
The fence is planned to be equipped with a system of sensors and cameras that will make it possible to monitor the situation around the clock regardless of weather conditions and without the need to be directly on the border line, she clarified. Algorithms of the alert system will be configured in such a way to respond to attempts to cross the border by people, not animals, the border service clarified.
The situation on the border between Poland and Russia is stable
The department called the situation on the border with Russia peaceful and stable. In 2022, 11 cases of illegal border crossing from the Kaliningrad region to Poland were recorded, the press secretary of the Warmian-Masurian border department Myroslav Aleksandrovich reported. In addition, cases of penetration into the border strip were recorded. These were lost mushroom pickers and tourists who wanted to take pictures against the background of the border post.
In November, Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak announced the start of construction of a temporary barbed wire fence on the border with the Kaliningrad region.
