Ukraine liberated almost as much territory in 5 weeks as Russia captured in 6 months – ISW

In five weeks, Ukrainian troops liberated almost as much territory as Russian troops had captured in six months. This is stated in an analytical report by the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

Based on its own ground control data, the ISW estimates that Ukrainian forces have recaptured approximately 253 square kilometers of territory since the start of the Ukrainian counteroffensive on June 4. At the same time, since January 1, Russian troops have seized a total of 282 square kilometers across the entire theater of operations.

“Ukraine’s official figures for liberated territory differ from ISW’s, almost certainly because Ukraine calculated its initial control of the area differently. The ISW provides its own figure for liberated territory to compare Russian and Ukrainian gains,” the analysts said.
According to the ISW, Ukrainian troops conducted counteroffensive operations on July 10 in at least three frontline areas.

“The Ukrainian military said that Ukrainian troops continue offensive actions in the Bakhmut, Berdiansk (western part of Donetsk and eastern part of Zaporizhzhia regions) and Melitopol (western part of Zaporizhzhia region) directions,” the analytical report says.

The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces reported that over the past week, Ukrainian troops liberated four square kilometers of territory in the Bakhmut sector, and a total of 24 square kilometers since the start of counteroffensive operations in the Bakhmut sector (probably around the beginning of June), according to the ISW report. They also noted that the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine also reported that Ukrainian troops had advanced up to one kilometer in the Berdiansk and Melitopol directions, and a total of 8.6 kilometers since the start of counteroffensive operations in these areas.
