Ukraine has recorded 10 cases of a new subspecies of the COVID-19 strain, Eris.
“Currently, 10 cases of the Eris subspecies of the COVID-19 strain have been detected by sequencing in Ukraine. Namely, in 6 regions: Dnipro, Zakarpattia, Sumy, Khmelnytsky, Ternopil, Chernivtsi regions,” the statement said.
As noted, Eris is a variant of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus strain Omicron. Its symptoms do not differ from those of other known strains of COVID-19. In particular, you may experience a sore throat, runny nose, shortness of breath, body aches, headache, and fever.
The specific difference of Eris is an additional mutation of the spike protein, which is more likely to affect weakened immunity. However, according to the WHO, the global public health risk from this strain is estimated to be low.
The Ministry of Health emphasizes that the basis for protection against severe COVID-19 is a course of three vaccinations: two doses of primary vaccination, followed by a booster vaccination five months after the second dose. COVID-19 vaccination in Ukraine remains free of charge.
“People who have weakened immune systems or concomitant diseases; pregnant women; people over 60; those at risk of severe illness and death due to coronavirus disease should take care of their immune system and get vaccinated. You can make an appointment for vaccination at your family doctor and vaccination centers,” the Ministry of Health adds.
