More and more people in the world are switching to electric cars. However, it’s worth remembering that even today these machines still have some drawbacks.
This was reported by uamotors.
In particular, many motorists fear that electric cars will behave unexpectedly in low temperatures. To check these concerns, the international MyDriver project conducted a study.
It was attended by 48 different models of electric vehicles:
- Polestar;
- Tesla;
- Geely;
- Porsche;
- Volkswagen;
- Audi and other brands.
To bring the test conditions closer to real life, the cars’ batteries were fully charged before the race and left for 12 teas in the cold. In addition to the drivers, there was one passenger in the car, and the temperature in the climate control system had to be constantly maintained at 24 degrees.
The results showed that in severe cold, electric vehicles lose a lot of range. Most of the participants traveled 40-60% less distance than they would have in the warm season.
The winner was the Chinese car Wuling Hongguang Mini EV. In the cold, it drove 103 km with a claimed maximum of 170 km, which means that even after standing in the cold all night the previous night, the car was able to save almost 61% of its initial charge. Another Chinese manufacturer, Weilai EC6, also showed good results. This car drove 336 km out of the claimed 615 km, which means it retained 54% of its range. Other participants that do not produce in China, including electric vehicles of well-known brands, showed a much worse result:
- Tesla Y traveled 279 instead of 594;
- Volkswagen – 167 instead of 430;
- Geely – 276 instead of 550;
- Tesla 3 – 200 instead of 468;
- Audi – 272 instead of 465;
- Porsche – 226 instead of 414;
- Polestar – 246 out of 515.
That’s why, if you want to buy an electric car, you should remember that these cars should be stored in heated rooms, parking lots, or garages.
As a reminder, the winter version of the traffic rules came into effect on October 1, so drivers may receive a fine for driving at speeds over 50 km/h on some city roads. Car owners face a fine for violating this rule:
- UAH 340 for exceeding the speed limit by more than 20 km/h;
- 1,700 UAH – for more than 50 km/h;
- UAH 3,400 – if exceeding the established speed limit led to an emergency situation with the subsequent possibility of deprivation of rights.
