Some foreign pharmaceutical companies have decided to stay and work in Russia. Thus, these companies pay taxes to the Russian treasury, which finances the war against Ukraine.
The Center for Countering Disinformation at the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine has identified at least 64 pharmaceutical companies that remain to do business in Russia.
Experts have divided these companies by country of origin. Most of them are from the USA. At once, 15 American pharmaceutical companies continue their work in the aggressor country.
These are companies such as:
- Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer, Merck Sharp & Dohme, Abbott, Bristol Myers Squibb, Eli Lilly, Viatris, Celgene, Organon, AbbVie Inc., Marathon Pharma, Amgen, Solgar, PTC Therapeutics, Unipharm, Inc.
9 more companies – from Germany:
- Bayer HealthCare, STADA, Menarini, BOEHRINGER I, Merck & Co, Bionorica, WÖRWAG Pharma, MERZ & CO, FRESENIUS AG
In third place in the number of pharmaceutical companies in Russia – India, 6 companies:
- Dr. Reddy’s, Sun Pharma, Glenmark, Innotech, Jodas Expoim Pvt Ltd, Sentiss Pharma Pvt Ltd
Four companies each from France, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom:
- French Sanofi-Aventis, Servier, BEAUFOUR IPSEN, Besins Healthcare
- Swiss Roche, Novartis, Sandoz, Octapharma (together with Austria)
- British GlaxoSmithKline, AstraZeneca, Reckitt Benckiser Group PLC, Eisai Europe Limited
Moreover, on the Russian market will remain 3 Italian pharmaceutical companies:
- Recordati, Zambon, Alfasigma S.p.A.
Five countries have two companies that continue to pay taxes in Russia
- Japanese Takeda and Astellas Pharma Inc.
- Czech PRO.MED.CS Praha a.s. and Zentiva,
- Romanian Rompharm and Biotehnos,
- Irish Aspen Pharma Ireland Ltd and BioMarin,
- Latvian Grindeks and Olainfarm AS
Nine more companies are the only representatives of their countries in the pharmaceutical market in Russia

Can’t do without foreign companies?
According to representatives of the pharmaceutical business, they have partially restricted the supply of some drugs to Russia, but according to international law, these restrictions do not apply to drugs needed by patients with cancer or diabetes and several other drugs.
But Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin has repeatedly stated that Russia has more than 600 companies ready to make import substitutions for the production of drugs, including vital ones.
