A game was released that is barely ‘pulled’ by all modern video cards

Once upon a time, a powerful gaming PC was defined by the phrase ‘it runs Crysis,’ and now it seems they’ll be asking ‘will it run Portal RTX.’ This new game challenges the most powerful graphics card of 2022, the GeForce RTX 4090. Some experts are already saying that only the GeForce RTX 5090 can handle the game.

TechPowerUp experts tested the performance of the game on a PC with a Ryzen 7 5800X processor and a whole line of powerful video cards. As it turned out, modern top video cards are able to reproduce the game with an acceptable number of frames per second only with a reduced resolution and the use of DLSS optimization technology.

The new remaster ‘does not pull’ at 60 frames per second modern top video cards. The powerful RTX 3090 Ti delivers just 49 frames per second at 1080p resolution. RTX 4080 and RTX 4090 produce more FPS in Portal RTX, but again in standard 1080p.

Real 4K resolution in the game is not properly supported by any video card. RTX 4090 needs DLSS to play Portal RTX in 4K 60fps configuration. Without DLSS, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 video card produces only 26fps in real 4K.

The RTX 3090 Ti card can deliver only 13fps, while AMD’s flagship Radeon RX 6900 XT card will ‘delight’ owners with 1fps.

Portal with RTX is a free add-on for all Portal owners, developed by NVIDIA Lightspeed Studios. Players are offered an already familiar world visually enhanced with ray tracing, new hand-crafted high-resolution textures, and new high-poly models. All this is done for the best view of the game in 4K resolution.

RTX technology simulates virtual light rays according to the physical laws of the real world. The reflection of light depends on the geometry and materials of the scene and the objects on it. Therefore, lighting and shadows in the scene look as realistic as possible. But RTX technology requires high computing power. Partly reducing the power requirements is the DLSS technology, which uses artificial intelligence to finish the details that the video card is not able to calculate.
