The M-class solar flare, which occurred in the area of sunspot AR3575, caused extensive shortwave radio communications outages in the South Pacific.
In Australia and Southeast Asia, sailors and radio amateurs reported signal loss at frequencies below 30 megahertz within an hour of the peak of the outbreak.
There were also short-term power outages in the region.
The radio and power outage was caused by a powerful pulse of X-rays and ultraviolet rays that reached the Earth about eight minutes after the solar flare.
