On October 1, at 21:00, Turkey conducted an air operation in northern Iraq to defeat Kurdish militants. It was a response to the terrorist attack that took place in the Turkish capital Ankara.
This was reported by the Ministry of National Defense of Turkey.
The Turkish armed forces hit caves, shelters, and warehouses in the regions of Metina, Hakurk, Qandil, and Gara in northern Iraq, which, according to the Ministry, are controlled by terrorists affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and the Kurdistan Communities Union (KCK).
A total of 20 targets were destroyed.
Turkey explained that it did so in accordance with the right of self-defense provided for in Article 5 of the UN Charter to stop terrorist attacks and secure its border.
“For the survival and security of our country and nation, the fight against terrorism will continue resolutely until there is not a single terrorist left,” the ministry emphasized.
The ministry assured that Turkey has taken all measures to avoid damage to civilian, historical and cultural property, as well as the environment.
Turkey, the United States and the European Union have recognized the Kurdistan Workers’ Party as a terrorist organization.
What preceded it?
On October 1, an explosion occur red on the outskirts of the central Kizilay Square in Ankara. It happened after two terrorists drove a commercial vehicle to the building of the Interior Ministry’s Main Security Directorate.
One of the terrorists blew himself up, the other was neutralized. Two police officers were lightly injured in the fire.
Subsequently, the group “Battalion of the Immortals”, affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), claimed responsibility for the attempted terrorist attack.
