The Americans showed a trailer house that saves fuel. The price of an energy-efficient trailer is not insignificant – from 125 thousand dollars.
Two people from Tesla, Ben Parker and Toby Kraus, decided to rethink the trailer homes that have gained popularity in recent years. They introduced the Lightship L1, an electric-powered camping trailer that claims not to consume the energy of an electric car. It also saves fuel when towed by a car with an internal combustion engine.
According to the creators, their task was to create a caravan unlike any other existing one. They applied all their experience, gained in particular at Tesla, and created the Lightship L1. Some of its design features resemble the Tesla Cubertruck, and its aerodynamic performance is three times higher than that of conventional trailers, the developers say. However, they do not provide exact data.
The main feature of the new product is a built-in battery with a capacity of 80 kilowatt-hours, almost like the Mercedes-Benz EQC. That is, the trailer actually moves on its own without affecting the electric car’s range. Lightship assures that a battery-powered car with a range of 480 kilometers will be able to travel the same distance towing the L1. This is also true for fuel cars.
In addition, the roof of L1 is covered with solar panels. They generate energy to charge the battery and also provide power to various electronics inside the motorhome. The trailer is 8.2 meters long, 2.5 meters wide, and three meters high in camping mode, in which it “grows” by raising the glazed part. It can comfortably accommodate four to six people inside, depending on the chosen modification.
The price of the L1 is not insignificant: it starts at $125,000, and it can be booked for five thousand dollars. Lightship will begin production at the end of 2024.
