Adobe Photoshop integrates AI to create images based on text prompts

Adobe has presented a beta version of Photoshop that can generate images using simple text prompts directly in the program. The company announced this on Tuesday, April 23, Engadget reports.

New Photoshop AI features have led to a 30% increase in Photoshop subscriptions, according to Adobe.

They’re already available in the beta version of Photoshop, and will be rolling out to all users later this year.

These functions use a library of reference images to create new ones and generate backgrounds.

“A big blank canvas can sometimes be the biggest obstacle. The idea of transferring something from your mind to the canvas has never been easier.”

What you need to know about Photoshop’s new AI feature

The new feature, simply called Create Image, will be available as an option along with the traditional function of importing an image into the program.

Generative Fill, an already well-known AI-based feature that allows you to add, expand, or delete certain parts of an image, has also been updated. It now allows users to add an AI image to an existing image and seamlessly embed it into the original.

Erin Boyce circled an image of an empty salad bowl and asked Photoshop to fill it with AI images of tomatoes. She chose one of the proposed vegetable options, which the AI placed in the salad bowl.

Adobe’s new AI feature in Photoshop allows users to easily replace parts of an image with a simple text prompt.

Erin then replaced the acoustic guitar held by the AI-created bear with several versions of electric guitars, simply using text prompts and without resorting to complicated tools or Photoshop brushes.

The new features are based on Firefly Image 3, the latest version of Adobe’s generative AI family.

Firefly 3 produces higher-quality images than previous models, provides more options, and better understands your prompts, according to Adobe. More than 7 billion images have been created with Firefly.

Generative AI has become the main character of the last year

Adobe is not the only company that implements generative AI functions in its products. Over the past year, they have updated their products with the help of AI:

  • Google – search;
  • Microsoft – Office suite;
  • Meta has started posting its own AI chatbot on Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram.

How Adobe solves the copyright problem

Adobe says that Firefly was trained on licensed media from Adobe Stock: it was designed to create content for commercial use.

At the same time, its competitors like Midjourney partially train their models by indexing images from the Internet, often without a license.

Interestingly, Bloomberg recently revealed that Firefly was partially trained on images generated by AI from the same competitors.

Can new Photoshop features be used to create fakes? Adobe assures that all images created in Photoshop using generative AI will automatically include tamper-proof “Content Credentials” in the file metadata, which act as digital “nutrient labels” and confirm that the image was generated by AI. At the same time, this does not provide complete protection against misuse of images – there are various ways to bypass metadata and watermarks.
