Aegis missile defense system with updated SM-6 Dual II SWUP interceptor successfully destroys ballistic missile

The Missile Defense Agency (MDA) and the U.S. Navy have successfully tested the updated Standard Missile 6 (SM-6) interceptor. The tests took place on March 30, 2023.

The USS Daniel Inouye (DDG 118) with the Aegis missile defense system took part in the tests. The tests took place at the Pacific Missile Range in Hawaii.

The USS Daniel Inouye (DDG 118) fired a salvo, launching two SM-6 Dual II interceptors with Software Upgrade (SWUP). They were able to successfully destroy the intermediate-range ballistic missile in the final phase of the flight.

This is the third successful test of a ship with the Aegis missile defense system, which used the SM-6 Dual II interceptor and the debut test of the SM-6 Dual II SWUP. MDA said that the successful completion of the test demonstrated that the SM-6 Dual II SWUP is ready for deployment to protect U.S. forces and allies.
