Air defense revolution: new SPYDER-MR system can detect and destroy targets on the move
The SPYDER (Surface-to-Air Python and Derby) system, developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems in Israel, is an improvement in air defense capabilities. The SPYDER-MR is equipped with Python-5 and Derby missiles. These missiles are designed to counter airborne threats: airplanes, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles, and ballistic missiles.
The SPYDER-MR system is distinguished by its mobility, rapid deployment capabilities, and advanced radar and control technologies. The system’s EL/M-2106 ATAR 3D surveillance radar can detect and track targets at long distances and altitudes, providing a comprehensive air defense shield. The vertical launch capability and 360-degree kill coverage ensure high effectiveness against multiple threats.
SPYDER is a family of next-generation mobile air defense systems that offers combat-proven capabilities. Selected by eight of the world’s most advanced armed forces that have deployed these systems, SPYDER has repeatedly demonstrated its effectiveness.
The SPYDER family includes several configurations adapted to specific needs, such as SPYDER SR (Short Range), SPYDER MR (Medium Range), SPYDER LR (Long Range), SPYDER ER (Extended Range) and the latest SPYDER All-in-One. These systems are designed to quickly neutralize aircraft, UAVs, high-precision munitions, and ballistic missiles.
SPYDER is a flexible and customizable airborne system based on an open architecture that combines advanced sensors, effectors and launcher configurations. High-precision interceptor missiles SPYDER, PYTHON 5 with dual-band infrared (IIR) and CCD homing warheads, as well as I-DERBY ER with a dual-pulse rocket engine for longer range can be adapted to operational requirements.
Among SPYDER’s key strengths are its operational and battle-proven systems, its ability to engage and destroy a wide range of enemy threats, its open, reconfigurable architecture, its on-the-go detection and its instantaneous firing upon stopping. The system is also equipped with dual-purpose missiles for air-to-air and surface-to-air combat, as well as a unique combination of two types of missiles equipped with IIR or RF homing heads, making SPYDER extremely versatile.
