Americans have identified the most reliable new cars

The leaders were mostly Japanese cars, mostly hybrids. But the electric versions are still behind.

Toyota, Lexus and BMW are recognized as the most reliable brands in our annual ranking of automotive reliability brands from the American Association of Consumer Reports. Moreover, the German car manufacturer rose by 10 positions compared to last year.

Mazda, which was second in this ranking last year, took fourth place, while Honda rounds out the top five. The top ten includes Audi, Subaru, Acura and Kia. Lincoln significantly improved its performance, which, compared to the past, immediately improved its position by 14 positions.

In the last place in the rating of experts was Mercedes Benz, whose cars scored only 26 points. Jeep and Volkswagen have a slightly better indicator.

Toyota Corolla Cross and Corolla Hybrid are among the most reliable models. Lexus GX and Mini Cooper, Toyota Prius and Mazda MX-5 were also reliable.

The Lincoln Aviator, Hyundai Kona Electric and hybrid Ford F-150 were recognized by the researchers as the most unreliable cars. Moreover, the latter earned only four points out of a hundred.

How reliability is calculated at Consumer Reports

The reliability index from Consumer Reports (CR for short) is calculated on a scale of 0 to 100 points with an average rating of 41 to 60 points. For a brand to rank, researchers must have enough survey data from consumers.

Every year CR asks its members about the problems they have had with their vehicles in the previous 12 months. This year, data was collected on more than 300,000 vehicles produced between 2000 and 2022. Consumers complained about 17 problem nodes in the car, including the engine, transmission, electronics, etc. Researchers use this information to assess the reliability of each mass model.
