Construction of Ukraine’s first underground school has begun in Kharkiv. The building will be able to withstand a direct hit from a S-300 missile, said Oleh Syniehubov, head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration.

The shelter will be able to accommodate about 500 people at a time – the same number of students and teachers in a local secondary school. In addition, people from the neighboring kindergarten, offices, and other institutions can take refuge here during alarms.

The construction will cost UAH 99.1 million. The protective structure will have several rooms, sanitary facilities, three exits, and will be equipped with an autonomous power source.

In total, the state subvention for the construction of shelters for Kharkiv region is UAH 224.6 million. This amount will cover 31 facilities, including both construction and major repairs.
