Apple presents its own artificial intelligence system

At WWDC 2024, Apple introduced a set of generative AI features called Apple Intelligence. These features will be available on iPhone, iPad, and Mac this fall. Users can expect improved text editing tools, image creation capabilities, and smarter organization features.

Key features of Apple Intelligence

Tools for working with texts

This feature allows users to edit text in a variety of applications using features such as automatic spell checking, text creation, and rewriting. Users can choose different writing styles, such as professional, informal, concise, or even poetic.

Intelligent organization

Emails and messages are now automatically categorized and prioritized based on importance. Previews provide a brief overview of the content of an email, not just a part of the first sentence.

Create images

Users can use Apple Intelligence to create images for emojis, presentations, or text messages. It can also turn thumbnails into detailed images or recommend images based on written content. In addition, new photo editing tools allow you to remove objects with precision.

Advanced features of Siri

Siri can now understand user requests based on context and information from different applications. It can retrieve information such as files, photos, or plan events by combining information from different applications. Siri can also access learning materials or change device settings using text commands. There is also an optional integration with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which offers additional text and image creation capabilities for users with paid subscriptions.

Attention to privacy

Apple emphasizes on-device data processing for most AI tasks. Cloud workloads use secure Apple servers with independently verified code. User data is not stored on servers, and all software is open for inspection.

Apple Intelligence is launching this fall with support for American English. Other languages will be added later.

Although Apple Intelligence offers promising features, it remains to be seen whether it will be able to solve problems such as errors in facts (the hallucination problem), which are common in generative AI models. In addition, ChatGPT integration raises concerns about reliability, privacy, and copyright.
