Apple removes apps that use AI to undress girls from the App Store

Following reports of problematic use of artificial intelligence to create inappropriate images on Huawei phones, Apple took similar action to remove apps from the AppStore that used generative AI to create fake nude images.

These programs were advertised as “art generators” capable of undressing any young lady for free. The removal of the respective software took place after 404 Media’s editorial team discovered and shared links to the said applications and their advertising.

It is noteworthy that these programs have been available in the AppStore since 2022. Developers were advertising their “brainchildren” on adult websites. Later, the “creators” were allowed to remain in the app store, provided that ads were removed from such sites, but at least one of these software continued to display inappropriate content until the beginning of this year (the app was removed from Google’s PlayStore just recently).

This incident raises the question of reactive moderation and the possibility of developers using all kinds of loopholes. The topic has surfaced at the most inopportune time for Apple, as it prepares for WWDC 2024, where important artificial intelligence announcements are expected for iOS 18 and Siri.

The incident also affects Apple’s efforts to build a reputation as a responsible company in the field of artificial intelligence development, including ethical licensing of training data. Delayed removal of NCI applications can have a negative impact on this image.
