‘Atlantis’, ‘Mad Wedding’ and 12 more Ukrainian films that can be watched on Netflix

The American streaming and production company Netflix is preparing to purchase a number of Ukrainian-made films.

The Netflix platform has been operating in Ukraine since 2016. Oleg Sentsov’s film “The Rhinoceros”, the documentary film “Winter on Fire” and two parts of the series “Servant of the People” produced by the studio “Kvartal 95” were the first to appear on it.

In September 2022, they were joined by three more films available for viewing in Ukraine.

  • “Wild Field” (2018) is a joint Ukrainian-Dutch-Swiss film based on the novel “Voroshilovgrad” by Serhiy Zhadan. The protagonist of the film returns to his hometown in Donbas and defends love, friends and an old gas station (family business) from those who are trying to seize Ukrainian lands.
  • “Amber Cops” (2021) is the story of a hardworking police officer who moves to a small town and starts a fight against the local mafia.
  • “A meeting of classmates” (2018) is a comedy film about the adventures of three school friends who go together to a meeting dedicated to the twenty-fifth anniversary of graduation.

Probably, by the end of this year, the Ukrainian film collection will be replenished with four more tapes.

  • “Mad Wedding” (2018) is a story about a celebration that was not without tricks from the father of the bride, taking hostages, calling in special forces and a happy ending.
  • “The Big Walk” (2022) is a comedy film about how two completely different families of businessmen and cultural workers accidentally meet on a lawn that each considers their own.
  • The Best Weekend (2022) is four different comedic stories about a hen party, meeting a rocker dad, a dream job, and the search for love, each of which goes haywire at some point.
  • “Sniper. “White Raven” (2022) is an action film about the transformation of an eccentric pacifist into a fighter for welfare, whose peaceful life was destroyed by the start of the war in Donbas.

In the future, other projects of the producer of the film “Wild Field” Volodymyr Yatsenko may also appear on the Netflix platform.

  • “Foxter and Max” (2019) is a family fantasy film about the adventures of Max, a 12-year-old schoolboy who runs away from home and a nanorobot dog with superpowers.
  • “Home” (2019) is a drama with Akhtem Seitablaev, which was nominated for the “Oscar” award for the best film in a foreign language. In the center of the plot is the story of a Crimean Tatar who goes to Kyiv to bring his sons home.
  • “Atlantida” (2019) is a film about life in Donbas after the victory of Ukraine, in which soldiers of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, veterans of the ATO, and volunteers played, not professional actors.
  • “Luxembourg, Luxembourg” (2022) – two twin brothers go to Luxembourg to meet their father, who once abandoned them, and constantly argue about whether they really need it.
  • Me and Felix (2022) is a story about a boy from the 90s that tells about friendship, family, first love and more through the lens of a child’s perception.

In total, we are talking about 14 Ukrainian films that will be broadcast on the Netflix platform. The value of the agreements is currently not disclosed, and their conclusion does not yet indicate a full-fledged entry of the streaming service into the domestic film market.

Let us remind you that Netflix is not the first time supporting Ukrainian cinema. In September, 48 prize-winners of the competition, organized with the support of the platform by the Ukrainian Film Academy, received grants for the creation of scripts.
