Belarus wants to introduce the death penalty for treason

It is proposed to apply the highest measure of punishment for officials and military personnel.

Belarus is planning to introduce the death penalty for treason at the legislative level. This was reported by the press service of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus.

It is reported that the deputies in the first reading supported the draft law ‘On changing the codes on criminal responsibility’.

The document, in particular, provides for the introduction of the death penalty in Belarus for officials and military personnel for committing treason.

The purpose of legalizing the use of an exceptional measure of punishment is ‘to provide a deterrent effect on destructive elements, as well as to demonstrate a decisive fight against treason.’

The draft law proposes the application of the death penalty for treason committed by an official who holds a public position or by a person to whom the status of a military serviceman applies.

In addition, as reported by the House of Representatives, the document also provides for the introduction of liability for the dissemination of false information discrediting the Belarusian army.

Note that in May 2022, Belarusian senators approved a draft law that allows the death penalty for terrorist attacks and attempted murder of foreigners or state officials.

It was also reported that in Belarus the death penalty threatens ‘railway partisans’.
