Belgium may transfer a small batch of fourth-generation F-16 Fighting Falcon fighters to Ukraine

Belgian authorities will check the possibility of transferring F-16 Fighting Falcon fighters to Ukraine. This was announced by Deputy Prime Minister of the Federal Government David Clarinval.

According to new information, Belgium may provide the Ukrainian Air Force with up to four fourth-generation F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter jets next year. But first, the Belgian Ministry of Defense will assess the wear and tear on the aircraft.

It should be noted that in early September 2023, Belgium announced that it would not supply Ukraine with fighter jets, despite the impending delivery of the F-35 Lightning II. The reason for this is the heavy wear and tear of the structure. Two weeks later, Ludivine Dedonder said that Brussels would take part in training Ukrainian pilots.

The Belgian Air Force still has about 45 fourth-generation F-16 Fighting Falcon fighters in service. They should be written off within 5-6 years. Deliveries of the first batch of fifth-generation F-35 aircraft are scheduled for 2024.
