Boeing flies modernized AH-64E Apache helicopter for the first time
Boeing has announced the first successful flight of the upgraded AH-64E Apache version 6.5 helicopter. The machine received updated software and an improved piloting interface.
“We are very excited to continue developing V6.5 software as it paves the way for the modernization of Apache,” said Colonel Jay Maher, Apache Project Manager for the U.S. Army.
It is noted that the new version of the helicopter also optimizes route planning and attack capabilities, improves Link 16 functions, and the open systems architecture will allow for easy implementation of new technologies in the future.
As a result, AH-64E Apache V6.5 will unify the entire E-model fleet under a single software, simplifying training and maintenance, and enabling the Army to meet standards and implement critical technologies.
Boeing representatives also revealed further plans to modernize the helicopter. According to them, work is underway to integrate the new T901 engine, created by General Electric Aerospace for the Army’s turbine engine improvement program. The new powerplants can be installed on Apaches and UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters, allowing the vehicles to cover a distance of 135 nautical miles (250 km), stay in place for about an hour and return to their starting point.
