Car keys are no longer needed: Genesis will recognize the driver by face

Genesis GV60 becomes the brand’s first model in Europe with facial recognition technology. The feature is already available in the US market.

The Genesis GV60 for the 2023 model year gets a technological boost in the European market in the form of new biometric features, including the world’s first facial recognition technology for keyless entry.

The so-called Face Connect feature allows customers to unlock and access their car with their face thanks to a facial recognition sensor with a deep learning image processing controller.

You’ll only need to access the car with its physical key once and set up your facial recognition profile – all subsequent locking, unlocking and engine starts can be done without the need for a physical key.

For some, this technology probably sounds too scary and confusing. However, Genesis says the system is easy to use, with an LED indicator on the center stack that visualizes the vehicle’s status and provides confirmation whenever the system is activated.

The automaker also ensures that biometric data is never downloaded or stored remotely outside of the vehicle’s HMI.

If this technology sounds familiar to you, it might be because a very similar feature is now very popular on smartphones and is used by millions of users around the world every day. Genesis believes that its use in the GV60 is ideal for outdoor activities such as swimming, climbing and running, where carrying a physical key is inconvenient.

It is important to note that this technology was available in the US market for the GV60. The South Korean brand says the electric luxury crossover is now also available to order in select markets in Europe, including the UK, where the GV60 is sold in Premium, Sport and Sport Plus grades. In the United States, the EV crossover is available in two versions – the entry-level GV60 Advance with standard four-wheel drive and a range of 400 km, and the GV60 Performance with 429 hp.
