Cars explode, people are evacuated: a large-scale fire breaks out at London Airport (video)

According to the British media, 5 people were taken to the hospital with combustion product poisoning. Eyewitnesses report that the fire is spreading rapidly through the parking lot, which is only five minutes from the airport terminal.

Due to an intense fire that broke out at London Luton Airport (Bedfordshire), all flights were temporarily suspended. This was reported on October 11 by the British newspaper Telegraph.

Eyewitnesses report car explosions and fire services recommend avoiding the area.

On the night of Monday and Tuesday, all air traffic at Luton Airport was suspended due to a large fire that broke out on the top floor of a multi-story parking garage. Authorities have restricted access to Bedfordshire Airport due to the firefighting process that began after a car caught fire and are urging citizens to avoid the area.

Five people, including four firefighters, were taken to Luton and Dunstable hospitals with a diagnosis of smoke inhalation.

According to an eyewitness who shared the information on the website X (formerly known as Twitter), it appeared that the entire parking lot had collapsed, and another witness described periodic explosions of cars in the parking lot.

The Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service claims that there has been significant structural damage to the multi-level parking lot at Luton Airport.

Videos and photos posted on social media show heavy fire and clouds of smoke. There were also reports of car alarms going off and loud explosions. One eyewitness described the speed at which the fire spread through the top floor of the parking lot as “incredible.”

“All flights are currently grounded as services respond to a fire in the Terminal 2 parking lot. Access to the airport is restricted and we urge passengers to avoid visiting the airport for the time being. Additional staff is available to assist passengers. Passengers should stay in touch with their airline for flight information,” a spokesperson for Luton Airport said.

The Bedfordshire Fire Service reported that the first call about the fire came in at around 20:47. The fire department arrived to extinguish a fire in the new multi-story parking lot, which is located just a five-minute walk from the terminal entrance.

The East Anglia Ambulance Service has announced its involvement in a critical incident involving a fire at Luton Airport. She also said that ambulances are already on the ground and additional resources, including a hazardous situation response team, are on the way.

The fire service recommends that residents of the area close windows and doors and avoid the fire area. Russell Taylor, a 41-year-old customer service director from Kinross, Scotland, saw the fire upon his arrival at Luton Airport from Edinburgh and described the events as “unbelievable fire spread.”
